Superior Product
My mattress arrived much earlier than expected!

I have prefered to sleep on the floor for the past 10 years and I am a side sleeper. Traditional mattresses make my back ache. My current apartment has concrete floors with thin carpet installed. I purchased this mattress after reading all the reviews and am 100% satisfied with it in every regard. Additionally, it fits in perfectly with my Asian themed bedroom. As other reviewers indicated, it arrives vacuum packed and resumes it's normal shape and size upon taking it out of the sealed bag. The outer cardboard box had normal shipping/handling dents, but was totally intact. There was no odor that other reviewers mentioned. I give this mattress a score of 100% on everything: exactly as described, quality, comfort, and usefullness. The stitching is well done and should hold up indefinitely. Tri-fold mattress
This arrived vacuum-sealed in a package so compact, I thought they sent me the wrong item at first. However as soon as you unwrap it, it inflates to normal size (3x27x75). It made my shiki futon even more comfortable than a regular bed mattress. After 1 month of use, there is no deforming at all.

I still think heavier-than-average people wouldn't want to sleep on this, but it's perfect if you weigh under 150 lbs or so.
Shikibuton
I bought this shikibuton while moving out of a dorm and into a house, as I had no bed of my own and didn't feel like buying/lugging a whole bed into my new place. The shikibuton is surprisingly soft, not as soft as a regular floor futon, but more firm. It is a bit short; I'm 5'8, and with pillows added I just barely fit stretched out. It folds up nicely as well. At first it does have a strong chemical odor which seems to have bothered other purchasers, but it doesn't bother me, and it goes away in time. It's also more absorbent than one would think. As for delivery, it reached me in time and in good shape, though unwrapping it from the plastic is an adventure. An excellent buy, overall, one I'm glad I made.

These are great!
I was very unsure when I purchased this product if it was what I wanted. I am so glad that I gave it a try. I don't usually write reviews, but I really could have used some good reviews when I was considering this.

Why I bought this:

1. I live in NYC and anything space-saving and multi-purpose is great.
2. I wanted an organic mattress, but could't really afford it, so I think going for something smaller is generally better for the environment than bigger (mattress, boxspring, bed frame)
3. My husband and I co-sleep with our baby and we wanted a King size (approximately) bed without taking up so much space. Also, this is low to the ground, so no need to worry about baby falling off of it.

Why this is so great:

Unusable
We ordered this futon for our son's room, because he occasionally has nightmares and instead of having him in bed with us, we thought it might be nice if we could go into his room to lie down to help soothe him.

When this futon arrived, I thought it was interesting because it came in such a TINY box - I thought I had ordered the wrong item. Actually, it turns out that it was just vacuum-packed with all the air sucked out. As soon as you open the plastic bag, the futon "inflates" to full-size. It was kind of cool to watch.

Colorwise, the futon was perfect. Size-wise, it is pretty thin, and I wouldn't use it on a hard floor, but it would probably be fine on a carpeted floor. I was very pleased with the way it folded up.

Unfortunately, however, it STUNK. The futon had an extremely strong chemical smell. I do not know what smelled, whether it was the foam, the cover, or the vacuum-sealing process (and the bag it was sealed in) but within moments, the...

My Savior
I bought the queen size version of this exact futon on eBay for $125. Amazon did not offer bigger sizes. I wanted more room for me to sleep and if I had company over they could share it with me. It fits two people very well. These are the dimensions to the futon I bought 3" thick x 60" wide x 80" long.

My sister lives in Japan so she gave me advice on what kind of futon to get and this is the one I picked.

PROSPECTIVE BUYERS:
-These are very comfortable. This is so close to a bed I can't feel the difference.
-Skip the inflatables, cots, and what-nots. You don't have to worry about pumps and punctures.
-I highly recommend them for ANY usage (everyday, when company is over, college, camping trips etc.)
-Easy to store and transport. Just roll it up and bam! done. You can carry it alone.
-I tested my futon on carpet and on hard floors. It's just as comfortable either way.

Excellent floor Futon
This was on my Fiancee's wish list. I purchased it from FutonFurnitures' amazon store. The item arrived quickly and in good condition. I let my Fiancee open it early as we had just set up the Christmas tree and we wanted to sleep near the tree to enjoy the ambiance. She said it was the best she had slept in a long time. She has ordered one for me for Christmas now and I eagerly await my floor futon (shikibuton).
Better than I thought it would be
I purchased this as a replacement for a similar futon I purchased on ebay. The futon from ebay was $45. Because I assumed the product came from the same company, I was expecting the thickness to be the same as the one I purchased from ebay. This was not the case. The padding was thicker than my original one from ebay; though it flattens over time, you can fluff it again by opening the futon and adjusting the cotton.

The outer fabric is not as strong as the one I purchased from ebay, but it is still strong enough. My futon from ebay has a canvas-like material which was extremely durable.

If you do not want to spend the money on a J-Life futon, this is well worth the money.

Mattress smells like gasoline.
This mattress has horrible gasoline chemical smell. After sleeping on this mattress for a few days, I have bad headache and I feel like throwing up.

Nice
It does have a distinct smell, but it isn't bad. The mattress is a lot thicker than I expected and very comfortable. I don't have a bed, so I've been using this for several months and it's been great, plus it is nice to be able to roll it up for the extra space.
Buyer Beware: Poor Item; Poor Service; Poor Experience!
This product was to be purchased for school. Item came in the mail and later subsequently opened to what was an extremely foul chemical/gasoline like smell. Completely unacceptable. I've been in garages where the odor has been more pleasant than this abomination for a futon mattress. Despite having had it sit in the sun for an afternoon the odor did not dissipate. The odor was so strong that the entire room would fill with its stench let alone any one who dare lie atop the futon. As such, a polite request to the seller was sent. Upon multiple messages the seller (DAN) finally replied completely side-stepping the issue of it being a defective and potentially hazardous product. He tried drawing the relationship of buying his goods to buying a tee shirt from a stand. Needless to say, Dan is standing by his product and refusing to provide a refund even despite my offer to pay the return shipping costs. loveing it
this is by far the best futon that i have owned. typically i have gone for the traditional couch futon. i decided on this cause i already have a nice couch, better then any futon one. this floor matress is great because it is only slept on, not sat on like the couch style and flattened out in odd spots and becomes lumpy. this one does flatten down but it is still super comfy, no lumps, and soft. i purchased about a month ago and have used it daily ever since.

Great temporary sleeping and lounging
Got this for a small family room to put in front of the television, so one could veg out and watch tv or nap. The straps are strong and you easily fold and tie it up, so it can be put away. The other nice feature is the cover can be removed for washing.

LOVE IT - BUY THE SET
ok - we hated our bed. had a mattress and a box spring hated it. My boyfriend has a herniated disk in his lower spine and read that Japanese mattress are the best for body support. he bought one of these in a twin size and was sleeping on the floor for years - well I wanted him back in the bed so I shoved out about $1000 for this whole set:

Nice and comfy
I read nearly all the reviews for the smaller size futon and was convinced to get the larger size. I'll admit I was a tiny bit apprehensive because of the few not-too-positive reviews but it's really inexpensive so I thought I'd try it. I'm so glad I did and that I got the large size too. I used to have a futon before but then I had a rather pricy matress that was alright but now I wonder why I ever thought to use anything but a futon. Four posters are beautiful but I haven't slept this comfortably in a while:) I had to move, so I've no space for that four poster now anyway. This is really convinient and comfy and so perfect for college student budget. I also haven't woken with killer backaches, for which I'm grateful. It's winter now and it's a poorly insulated flat I've got, but it's surprisingly warm despite being on the floor. Highly recommend this one. It rolls nicely and is light:)
